Palatal Expansion

Facts:

First case of palatal expansion was in 1860!

An orthoPEDIC (not orthoDONTIC) movement - it permanently changes the shape of the upper jaw.

Crossbites can cause tooth wear and grinding habits, eventual fracture of the teeth, surrounding gum and bone loss and abnormal function of the temporomandibular joint.

Palatal Expansion can begin at 5 years of age - all depends on compliance!

A stable standard of care that can avoid correcting it surgically once you are an adult.

Creates space for erupting teeth - secondarily addresses dental crowding.

Moral of the Story:

Sooner is better than later... get rid of the dysfunctional occlusion and subsequent harm to the teeth and surrounding issues!

"The best way to escape from a problem is to solve it!" -Brendan Francis
